Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are beneficial in creating clinical practice guidelines and identifying objectives for future research. The present lecture covers the following components: types of reviews, framing the research questions, conducting literature searches/data extraction, and ways to improve the quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses before submitting them for publication.
Dr Venkatesh Babu N is a teaching faculty in Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry, College of Dental Medicine, University of Sharjah, UAE. He has over 14 years of academic and research experience. He serves as the Associate Editor, for International Endodontic Journal. He is the recipient of the “Young achiever award” in 2016 from Conservative and Endodontic Association of Tamilnadu and the “Young investigator award – Research & Publication (Individual category)” in 2018 and 2019 from International Medical University. He is a prolific researcher who has 114 publications in reputed journals. He is one of the project leader for developing reporting guidelines for various study designs in Endodontics, titled; “Preferred Reporting Items for study Designs in Endodontology (PRIDE)”. His area of research interests is in antimicrobial peptides/ nano-formulations for root canal disinfections and evidence-based dentistry.

“RE-VISITING THE ROOT CANAL – IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?
A CLINICAL UPDATE”
Retreatment in endodontics has changed fundamentally in the last few years following the introduction of the surgical operating microscope. Cases that once seemed impossible became easy and exciting to operate. Although initial root canal therapy has been shown to be a predictable procedure with a high degree of success, failures can occur after treatment. As fewer teeth are extracted, an increasing number of retreatment cases have been recorded in the past 15 years. Utilization of the enhanced magnification devices in endodontic retreatment has brought significant advantages and has expanded the scope of indications using a non-surgical approach. Procedures such as bypassing a ledge, removing broken instrument or repair a perforation have become considerably more reliable.
Also, there has been advances in terms of dental materials used in endodontics and root canal sealers are no exception to it. Lately new root canal sealers have been introduced by the name of “Bioceramics”. Bioceramic sealers are an attempt to develop a biocompatible sealer with ideal physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological properties. Bioceramic is a term introduced for an important subset of biomaterials that can be classified as bioinert, bioactive or biodegradable according to the interaction with surrounding tissues. However, apart from materials the root canal system itself plays an important role in the success of the endodontic therapy. This system is not as simple as it looks to be. The knowledge of the normal and its frequent variations can greatly enhance the success rate of endodontic practice. Curved root canals exhibit great difficulty in cleaning, shaping & obturation of the root canal system, therefore determining the degree of curvature of root canal before starting the endodontic treatment is mandatory.

He is among the very few dentists in Oman who hold a specialist endodontic license to practice endodontics. Along with his academic position, he holds an exclusive specialized microscopic endodontic practice in Oman.
He has had the opportunity and privilege to significantly contribute to various books on his specialty. Textbook of Endodontics, Essentials of endodontics, Biomaterials in Endodontics are to name few of them.
He is also the Editor of the “Clinical Atlas of Retreatment in Endodontics” published by reputed Wiley Blackwell Publication house.
He has been active in publishing scientific papers in various peer reviewed journals of international standards.
He believes “Learning should never stop” & therefore he is pursuing his PhD from reputed Bart’s London School of Dentistry, Queen Mary University, London which is ranked 14th in the world in QS World Rankings in the subject of Dentistry.

DR. MOHAMMED HOSSEIN NEKOOFAR
HYDRAULIC CALCIUM SILICATE CEMENTS IN ENDODONTICS, AN UPDATE.
The introduction of hydraulic calcium silicate cements (HCSCs) by Torabinejad and his colleagues in 1993 and the approval of the clinical applications in Conservative Dentistry by FDA in 1995 has been scientifically supported and modernized many of traditional Endodontic treatment modalities particularly vital pulp therapy approaches.
In addition, it has increased the available options for most of the challenging Endodontic treatments such as the repair of root perforations and/or the treatment of pulpally involved immature permanent teeth. Mmoreover, the outcome of surgical Endodontics improved dramatically.
Recent development of nanotechnology and enhancement of biomaterial sciences has also significantly improved the properties of HCSCs that results in overtaking the disadvantages of bio-ceramics in clinical applications such as unpredictable setting process, tooth discoloration and difficult handling.
In this presentation following a short review of the chemical, physical and biological properties of HCSCs, the recent progress in biomaterial science and its results will be described. The use of root canal sealers contain HCSCs is also another paradigm shift in Endodontics that will review and discuss.

CBCT IN ENDODONTICS: SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE AND CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
During the past few years, so many advancements changed the way how root canal treatment are performed
Ultrasonics has infiltrated into almost all phases of endodontic treatment, starting from coronal access, removal of post and broken instruments, and retro-cavity preparations.
Doing all these procedures under high magnification and illumination using the surgical microscope has opened new frontiers to the clinicians.
Cone beam computed tomography is rapidly invading our field with so many clinical applications that modern Endodontists become relying on it in almost every case. The importance of integrating the third dimension of this new tool has become obvious to everyone. However, some questions have to be answered;
Are there specific parameters for the CBCT machines to be used in Endodontics? and if so what are theses?
Are CBCT in accordance with the ALARA rules used in radiation exposure?
What are the clinical applications of CBCT in Endodontics?
This lecture will answer these questions and present several cases where CBCT was an essential part in diagnosis and treatment planning and some times during the endodontic work itself.
Prof. Hashem was graduated in the Faculty of Oral and Dental medicine, Cairo University 1990. He got his master degree from the same university in 1997. In 2001, he finished his PHD in Endodontics from Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University and promoted to be a lecturer in Endodontic department in the same university. He among others established the Egyptian association of Endodontists in 2001. He was awarded the best research prize in Ain Shams University 2005. In 2007, He became an associate professor in the same faculty. In 2009, he among others established the Arab Micro-Dentistry Association and became its president. He was assigned the head of the postgraduate continuous education in the faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University in 2010. In 2011, Dr. Hashem moved to the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine at Future University where he founded and started one of the finest education centers in the Middle East. Dr. Hashem conducts a postgraduate Micro-Endodontic course every month in this center since 2012. In 2012, he was promoted to full Professor position in department of Endodontics in the same University. He has been since 2012 visiting Metro-Health hospital in Cleveland, USA and conducting a micro-Endodontic course to the residents of the general residency program there. Dr. Hashem was chosen by the Egyptian Association of Endodontists to be Egypt country representative in the International Federation of Endodontic Associations in 2014. He became a certified speaker to FDI in 2014. He is serving also as the general secretary of the Egyptian Association of Endodontists since 2015. In the beginning of 2016, Dr. Hashem joined the board of the Egyptian Dental Syndicate and was acting as the head of the continuous education committee. He was nominated as a Fellow of the International College of Dentists (FICD) in 2016. In 2018, He was chosen Africa Regent director in the International Federation of Endodontic Associations (IFEA). In 2019, he became the head of endodontic dept., Future University. Currently, he is the head of Endodontic dept., Ain Shams University. Dr. Hashem is a member of several national and international associations. He serves as a reviewer in several prestigious international journals including JOE, IEJ and others. He lectured in numerous national and international conferences.
Prof. Hashem has more than 35 publications in Journal of Endodontics, Journal of Adhesive Dentistry, the International Endodontic Journal, Endodontic practice today, the Asian Journal for Animal Sciences and the Journal for Experimental and Toxologic Pathology.
Prof. Hashem holds a private practice limited to Micro Endodontics in Cairo.

KANAL TEDAVİLİ POSTERİOR DİŞLERİN RESTORASYONUNDA NO POST NO CORE YAKLAŞIMI; ENDOKURON RESTORASYONLARI
Endodontik tedavi görmüş dişlerin uzun dönemdeki başarısı endodontik tedavi kadar kök kanal sisteminin yeniden enfeksiyonuna yol açmayan başarılı kuronal restorasyon ile de yakın ilişkilidir. Adeziv dişhekimliği ve restoratif materyallerdeki gelişmeler ile birlikte dişlerin biomekaniğinin de daha iyi anlaşılması, endodontik tedavi görmüş dişlerin restorasyon konseptinin değişmesine neden olmuştur. Diş sert dokularının maksimum korunması ve biyomekaniği diş sert dokuları ile uyumlu güncel restoratif materyallerin kullanımı yeni tedavi anlayışının temelini oluşturmaktadır. Kanıta dayalı veriler çok madde kayıplı posterior dişlerde uygulanan adeziv monoblok endokuron restorasyonlarının, post+kor+kuron restorasyonları ile benzer başarıya sahip olduğunu ve kalan diş sert dokularını koruduğunu göstermektedir. Bu sunumda klinik çalışmalar, kanıta dayalı diş hekimliği verileri ve klinik vakalar eşliğinde çeşitli restoratif materyallerden üretilen farklı posterior endokuron restorasyonlarının endikasyonları, preparasyon tasarımları, yapıştırma prosedürleri ve başarısı tartışılacaktır.
İstanbul Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi'nden 1994 yılında mezun oldu. 1995-1999 yılları arasında aynı üniversitenin Diş Hastalıkları ve Tedavisi Ana Bilim Dalı'nda doktora yaptı. 2002 yılında Yeditepe Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Diş Hastalıkları ve Tedavisi Anabilim Dalı'nda yardımcı doçent, 2006 yılında doçent, 2014 yılında da profesör ünvanlarını aldı. Tokyo Medical and Dental School ve University of Pensylvania School of Dentistry’de misafir araştırmacı olarak bulundu. İstanbul Dişhekimleri Odası Sürekli Dişhekimliği Eğitim komisyonunda, Türk Diş hekimleri Birliği, Restoratif Diş hekimliği Derneği ve International Association of Dental Research’ın uluslararası kongrelerinin bilimsel komitelerinde yer aldı. 2013-2017 yılları arasında Continental European Division of IADR’ın yönetim kurulu üyeliğini ve 2014-2016 yılları arasındaki dönem başkanlığını yürüttü. 2017 yılından itibaren Restoratif Diş Hekimliği Derneği’nin başkanı olarak görev yapmaktadır. Halen Yeditepe Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Restoratif Diş Tedavisi Anabilim Dalı Başkanıdır ve adeziv dişhekimliği ve dental materyaller ile ilgili ulusal, uluslararası pek çok bilimsel yayını ve sunumu bulunmaktır. Beyazlatma, kompozit vener, porselen lamina, endodontik tedavi görmüş dişlerin restorasyonu, direkt-indirekt posterior restorasyonlar konularında konferans ve hands-on kurslar düzenlemektedir. IADR, TDB, Restoratif Diş Hekimliği Derneği, Lazer Akademisi Derneği üyesidir.
NO POST NO CORE APPROACH IN THE RESTORATION OF ENDODONTICALLY TREATED POSTERIOR TEETH; ENDOCROWN RESTORATIONS
The long-term clinical success of endodontically treated teeth is closely related to the endodontic treatment as well as to the successful coronal restoration that does not cause re-infection of the root canal system. With the developments in adhesive dentistry and restorative materials and a better understanding of the biomechanics of the teeth, the restoration concept of endodontically treated teeth has been changed. Maximum protection of dental hard tissues and contemporary restorative materials whose biomechanics are compatible with dental hard tissues became the fundamentals of the new treatment approach. Evidence-based data indicate that adhesive monoblock endocrown restorations have similar success as the post+core+crown restorations in posterior compromised endodontically teeth and preserve remaining dental hard tissues. In this presentation based on clinical trials and evidence-based dentistry results and using clinical cases, indications, preparation designs, luting procedures, and success of different types of posterior endocrown restorations fabricated from various restorative materials will be discussed

YENİ NESİL ENDODONTİK TEDAVİ ENDİKASYONLARI ?
APEKSOGENEZiS, APEKSiFiKASYON ve REVASKÜLARiZASYON
Çürük veya travmatik yaralanmalar daimi matür veya immatür dişlerin pulpalarında reversibl veya irreversibl hasara yol açar. Geleneksel endodontik tedavide reversibl pulpitisli dişlerde pulpa canlılığını korumak için indirekt, direkt kuafaj, parsiyel koroner veya total koroner vital amputasyon tedavileri uygulanır. Bu tedaviler özellikle vital açık apeksli dişlerde apeksogenezisin yani kök gelişiminin devam etmesini sağlarlar. Ancak günümüzde irreversibl pulpitisli dişlerde kanal tedavisine alternatif olarak yapılan vital pulpa tedavilerinin başarılı olması, pulpitisli dişlerdeki tanı sınıflandırmasını değiştirmiştir.
Açık apeksli devital pulpalı dişlerde, apikal konstrüksiyon olmadığı için kanal dolumu sırasında hermetik bir kök kanal dolgusu sağlamak mümkün olamamaktadır. Bu tarz olgulardaki tedavi yöntemi; kalsiyum hidroksit kullanılarak geleneksel apeksifikasyon tedavisi ile apekste kalsifik bariyer oluşumunu indüklemek ve böylece kök kanal dolgusunu yapabilmektir. Son yıllarda kalsiyum hidroksit ile apeksifikasyon tedavisine alternatif bir yöntem olarak, kökün apikal üçlüsüne yerleştirilen yapay bir bariyer olan biyouyumlu MTA ile apeksifikasyon sağlanmaktadır. Bu tedavi yöntemi uzun süreli kalsiyum hidroksit uygulamasının kalkmasını sağlar, dişin geçici olarak restore edilmesine bağlı koroner mikrosızıntı ve kırılma riskini ortadan kaldırır.
2004 yıllından bu yana, özellikle olgu bildirimi tarzında yayınlarda, genç yaştaki çoçukların devital pulpalı ve periapikal lezyonlu açık apeksli dişlerinde kalsiyum hidroksit ve MTA apeksifikasyonuna alternatif olarak revaskülarizasyon tedavisi önerilmektedir. Bu tedavinin kök gelişiminin tamamlanmasını sağlayan biyolojik temelli alternatif bir tedavi olduğu iddia edilmektedir. Son yıllarda matür periapikal lezyonlu dişlerde bile bu tedavinin başarılı olduğunu, hatta pulpal vitalitenin alındığı ileri süren sınırlı sayıda klinik çalışmalar vardır. Bu sunumda kök gelişimi tamamlamış veya tamamlanmamış reversibl- irreversibl pulpitisli vital dişlerde kalsiyum hidroksit ve MTA kullanılarak yapılan vital pulpa tedavileri yanı sıra, devital pulpalı ve periapikal lezyonlu açık apeksli dişlerde kalsiyum hidroksit ve MTA kullanılarak apeksifikasyon tedavisi ve de revaskülarizasyon tedavisinin klinik ve radyografik prognozu hakkındaki bilgilerimizi yaptığımız uluslararası dergilerde yayınlanmış makalelerimizin ışığı altında sizlerle paylaşmak istiyorum.
1955 yılında Giresun /Şebinkarahisar’da doğdum. İlk ve Orta öğrenimimi 1963-1969 yılları arasında İstanbul Gültepe İlk ve Ortaokulunda tamamladım.
Lise öğrenimimi 1969-1972 yıllarında İstanbul Kabataş Erkek Lisesinde tamamladım.
1972-1974 yılları arasında Batı Almanya’da Köln Üniversitesi Kimya Fakültesi’nin ön hazırlığı olan Studienkolloge tamamladım.
1974 Ekim’de girdiğim Ege Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesinden 15 Ocak 1980 yılında mezun oldum.
1980 Mayıs da Ege Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Diş Hastalıkları ve Tedavisi Ana Bilim Dalına Araştırma Görevlisi olarak girdim.
Kısa dönem askerlik görevimi Nisan 1981 de tamamladım.
Ağustos 1985 yılında aynı Anabilim Dalında “Dişlerde Dokusal ve Kronojik Yaşlanma Belirtileri Aralarında İlişkilerin Araştırması” konulu doktora tezimi tamamladım.
Nisan 1987 döneminde merkezi yabancı dil sınavını verdikten sonra, 23 Ekim 1989 yılında girdiğim Doçentlik sınavında başarı göstererek Diş Hastalıkları ve Tedavisi Ana Bilim Dalında Doçentlik ünvanını kazandım ve aynı tarihte Doçent kadrosuna atandım. Mart 1995 yılında da Profesörlük kadrosuna atandım. İyi derece Almanca ve İngilizce bilmekteyim.
Haziran 1998 Eylül 1999 tarihleri arasında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin Philadelphia şehrindeki Temple Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesinin Endodonti Ana Bilim Dalında misafir öğretim görevlisi olarak, lisans ve ve lisanüstü öğrenci eğitiminde görev aldım.
1995-1999 yılları arasında Ege Üniversitesi Bilim Teknoloji Merkezi Danışma Kurulu üyeliği yaptım. Kariyoloji Derneği, Türk Endodonti Derneği, European Society of Endodontology derneklerine üyeyim.
2006 - 2011 (Şubat) yılları arasında Ege Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Diş Hastalıkları ve Tedavisi Ana Bilim Dalı Başkanı olarak görev yaptım.
2017-2022 (Mart) yılları arasında Endodonti Anabilim Dalı’nda anabilim dalı başkanlığını yürüttüm.
2006 yılında basılan “Endodontide Tanı ve Tedaviler” adlı kitabımın dişhekimliği camiasına 1, 2 ve 3. baskısı sunuldu.
Araştırıcının uluslararası ve ulusal dergilerde yayınlanmış birçok makalesi bulunmaktadır.
Diş Hekimi olan eşim 1985-2012 yılları arasında beri İzmir - Alsancak Ağız Diş Sağlığı Hastanesinde çalışmış ve emekliye ayrılmıştır. İki çocuk sahibiyim.
CONTEMPORARY ENDODONTIC TREATMENT INDICATIONS?
APEXOGENESIS, APEXIFICATION AND REVASCULARISATION
Caries or traumatic injuries teeth would cause reversible or irreversible injuries within the pulps of permanent mature or immature teeth. In teeth with reversible pulpitis, conventional endodontic treatment requires indirect-direct pulp capping, partial coroner or total coroner vital amputation treatment in order to ensure pulp vitality. These treatment modalities provide continuation of apexogenesis, in other words, root development in vital teeth with open apices. However, the high success rate of vital pulp treatment as an alternative to root canal treatment in teeth with irreversible pulpitis has changed the diagnostic classification of pulpitis.
Since there is no apical constriction in non-vital teeth with open apices, a hermetic root canal filling is not possible during endodontic treatment. In such cases, induction of calcific barrier formation at the apex by using calcium hydroxide and completion of the root canal treatment with the general apexification is the treatment of choice. In recent years, as an alternative to this conventional method, apexification is provided by applying MTA which is a biocompatible barrier to the apical third of the root. This method eliminates the long calcium hydroxide use and the risk of coronal microleakage and fracture because of the temporary restorations.
Since 2004, especially in teeth with non-vital pulps, open apices and periapical lesions, revascularization treatment is suggested as an alternative to apexification treatment with calcium hydroxide and MTA in various case reports. This treatment is advocated as a biologically based alternative approach that provides apexification of the teeth. In recent years, some reports state the successful outcomes of revascularization treatment in mature teeth with periapical lesions, even presenting the presence of pulpal vitality following the treatment.
In this presentation, I would like to share my experiences and knowledge about the vital pulp treatments in vital teeth with reversible-irreversible pulpitis and with completed-uncompleted root development, and also, the clinical and radiological prognosis of apexification treatment with calcium hydroxide, MTA and revascularization in non-vital teeth with open apices and periapical lesions under the light of my papers that are published in distinguished international journals.
I was born in 1955 in Giresun (Şebinkarahisar). I studies in İstanbul Kabataş Male High School between1969-1972. After high school education, I studied chemistry in Cologna University in Germany for 2 years (1972-1974). I graduated from Ege University, School of Dentistry in 1980. At the same year, I began to work as a research assistant in Department of Restorative Dentistry in Ege University, School of Dentistry. In 1985, I finished my PhD thesis in Ege University, School of Dentistry with the thesis entitled “Evaluation of signs and relations of textural and chronological aging of teeth” Since 1995 I have been working as a professor in department of Endodontology in Ege University, School of Dentistry.
l have worked as a visitor Professor/lecturer between 1998-1998 in Temple University, Faculty of Dentistry in US and gave lectures to undergraduate and graduate students in Temple University.
In 2006, I have published my Book titled “Diagnosis and Treatments in Endodontics” which has third edition.
l have many articles in national and international journals and gave many lectures all around the world.
